Concept

The design of 1 Angel Square is currently the UK’s highest BREEAM rated office building to date.
It provides a landmark headquarters building that exemplifies the client organisation's ethical brand and gives them a flexible facility that can encompass all of their multiple business units under a single roof, to build a stronger working culture and more efficient organisation.

The concept of the beehive generates a shape ideally suited to the ethos of the client and allows a passage of 'earth cooled' air throughout, improving the working environment. Once cooled the air moves through a 50,000 cubic metre atrium that is the heart of the building.

Many types of office activity take place around the perimeter of the ‘hive’, giving views across the city but also into and across the atrium, hinting at the transparency of the organisation, through the active double skin facade.

A series of design options were developed utilising Building Information Modelling systems and tested using a variety of integrated simulation tools to measure environmental and workstation performance and efficiency.

The project has been an exemplar in client/designer/contractor collaboration.

Flexible working enabled by IT technology has reduced the office floor space by 15% compared with the previous accommodation.

The ground floor of the atrium can be used for public and private events.
